James McCormick started this petition to U.S. Senate and

Legitimate veterans are being wrongfully accused and publicly humiliated over “Stolen Valor” accusations.

Information also illegally accessed by government employees or even legitimately  through FOIA and public background check sites are also being used to publicly humiliate and defame our American heroes and those perpetrators that do this are rarely if ever held accountable for falsely reporting, slander  or public defamation without a long drawn out and expensive civil lawsuit that ultimately falls on the shoulder of those wrongfully attacked by these perpetrators.

Social Media sites are a hot bed for this activity and  allow anonymity and even the creation of memes and altered photos to allow perpetrators to make legitimate veterans appear in uniform wearing unauthorized awards or altering the uniform to create a false picture of legitimate veterans purely for the purpose of humiliation and to advance personal or political agendas.

Public videos are often seen uploaded of legitimate veterans and even kids as young as 10 years old being approached by adults demanding they remove military clothing or badges they are wearing they have earned or in kids cases in support of a family member of friend or maybe just playing soldier as most people did as children before the “Stolen Valor Outing” craze hit and has become a money maker for dubious individuals through YouTube and other pay as you click accounts.

These false accusations must be stopped through appropriate laws that require social media sites to immediately remove all unverified information and alert law enforcement of the actual identity of those making these slanderous comments.

We ask that the law demand appropriate legal action against those who make these false allegations which should include a legitimate “Stolen Valor” investigation into the perpetrator,  identification of all involved and a fine of no less than $10,000 per act of false accusations public videos without verified proof of real stolen valor. We ask this law include retribution to the victim of no less than $10,000 per accusation or event that slanders or defames a legitimate veteran and mandatory jail or community service that ensures the offender and others realize that while true stolen valor is despicable, falsely accusing or defaming people shall hold the same disgust and justice remedies designed to reduce and prevent both.
