Bill Streifer started this petition to U.S. Navy and

In March 1968, a Soviet nuclear-armed submarine, K-129, sank in the Pacific Ocean. Why? No one knows.

Some former high-ranking Soviet naval officers still believe -- now, after more than fifty years -- that K-129 was rammed by the USS Swordfish (SSN-579), a U.S. nuclear submarine. Others believe, that the Russians, revenging the loss of K-129, sank the USS Scorpion in May 1968.

But the Swordfish could not have sunk the K-129 since, at the time of the loss of K-129, it was returning from a secret mission off the coast of Wonsan, North Korea -- en route to Yokosuka, Japan -- following theJanuary 23, 1968 North Korean seizure of the USS Pueblo (AGER-2), a U.S. Navy reconnaissance ship.

Nothing can be proved, however, since all submarine missions are highly classified.

Following the loss of K-129, the Soviets requested the Swordfish's deck logs. The U.S. Navy and Pentagon refused, but they did assure the Russians that the Swordfish was more than 2,000 miles from K-129 when it sank to the ocean floor... again without proof.

Then in 1995, the U.S. provided "excerpts" of the Swordfish's deck logs from that period, but the Russians still weren't convinced. Only the Swordfish's Quartermaster log (showing the Swordfish's exact position at the time of K-129's loss) would convince the Russians and the world of Swordfish's innocence.

If the Swordfish didn't sink the K-129, and the Russians sank the Scorpion in revenge, the crew of the Scorpion died in vain and their families suffered needlessly.

By signing this petition, we might convince the U.S. Navy and/or Pentagon to declassify the Swordfish's exact location and vindicate this U.S. nuclear submarine and crew once and for all.
