Law to require copies of credit/background checks when a fee is charged to obtain them.
Petition to the Congress of the United States to pass a consumer protection law. When anyone applies to rent or applies for certain loans, whether it be from a person or a business, the perspective landlord or business will often charge a perspective customer (or customer) a fee for running credit and background checks. However, recent studies have shown that a majority of landlords & businesses will take multiple (sometimes hundreds) of applicants and only actually run the checks on those that they consider for the business. This law would require landlords/businesses to provide proof (e.g. copies of the reports) that the checks in question were actually performed or refund the charge, or, they would be liable for 3X the amount charged as a fine back to the applicant(s). There are zero economic effects on landlords/businesses and the economic savings to customers can be in the thousands of dollars each, depending on how many applications they may file.
