Melanie Wu started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

Taiwan: n. a democratic, feminist, and progressive nation who is unrecognized by most others.

When you look up Taiwan, what you will find is: "The Republic of China, commonly known as Taiwan." As of now Taiwan is unrecognized by all except 18 Nations. But why is this? It is because of the relationships between foreign nations and China. Due to increasing tensions with China and trying to balance US foreign affairs with the growing superpower, the US has maintained a non-diplomatic, informal relationship with Taiwan. Despite having sold over $2 billion dollars worth of defense weapons to Taiwan in order for it to protect itself from China & Taiwan being an important strategic location militaristically for the US, The US has yet to recognize the country as it's own independent of China.

Taiwan is it's own unique, thriving culture! (Nothing like China)

When Taiwan was discovered it was called "Formosa" which means "beautiful island", and that is nothing short of the truth. From it's daily night markets to beautiful nature reserves, one can see the vibrant culture that makes Taiwan distinctly different from China.

If we're talking about politics, Taiwan is a democratic nation ran under a woman president! (a far cry from China). And has almost completely eradicated poverty! (with less than 1% living below the poverty line!). It's government allocates billions to social welfare and assistance programs and is the 5th largest lender of money globally! ~Not bad for a small island.

If we're talking tourism, Taiwan is home to the famous night markets (ex: Shilin) that are featured in many travel vlogs/youtube videos; the ones that the night markets in California are based upon (626 Night Market, OC Night Market, etc.). The island is also over 70% nature and home to many diverse and endangered species! such as leopards, bears, dolphins, etc. which are under strict governmental protection in hopes of preserving it's biological diversity.

I am Proud. I am Taiwanese.

Because Taiwan is unrecognized by many as it's own unique nation, I am placed in this position where i am unable to claim my own heritage. We are from Taiwan, but we are not considered "Taiwanese". Taiwanese is not an option on the upcoming US 2020 Census despite there being a large highly educated population of Taiwanese-Americans.

By recognizing Taiwan as Taiwan (Not the Republic of China [aka Taiwan]), it would allow other international governmental organizations to follow in suit, allowing Taiwanese people to fully embrace our unique culture and not be silenced by China.
