Benjamin Cacciaglia started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

Occupational therapy (OT) works to help individuals develop skills in their daily life. OT's have played a critical role in helping individuals with disabilities develop life skills in order to be successful within their community. With expertise in interpersonal skills, interviewing skills, and work reintegration skills, OTs can provide services so that individuals can fully participate within their community!

A newly introduced bill, H.R. 555 Disability Integration Act of 2019, proposes to transition individuals with disabilities from long-term care facilities into community-based residential facilities. If the bill becomes a federal law, individuals with disabilities will be able to access a greater amount of community services.

Currently, there is a dilemma in which occupational therapy is not included in the community-based services subparagraph. This means that OT is not listed in this bill. Adding occupational therapy to this bill will enhance an individual's ability to not only develop life skills but also acquire the ability to navigate independently within their community.

I ask you to think of your own community and how difficult it can be to navigate through the community without a disability. Now imagine yourself with a disability. If you did not have the life skills to be able to access the community it would be a very difficult process. Occupational therapy can help this transition become less difficult and set you up for success! Are you willing to help the cause?
