Stand with the National Kidney Foundation and support The Living Donor Protection Act (H.R. 5263) sponsored by Representative Jerrold Nadler (D- NY) and Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX). This bill aims to protect living donors from insurance discrimination and promote education about living donation. H.R. 5263 will make it unlawful for insurance companies to decline, terminate, and limit coverage or charge higher premiums for life, disability, or long-term care insurance policies because of someone's status as a living organ donor. Furthermore, the bill clarifies that living organ donors may use time granted through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to recover from transplant surgery.
To educate the general public and to ensure living donors and individuals who are considering living donation understand their rights under this Act, the bill also requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to review and update publicly available information related to organ donation, including living donation.
Living organ donation saves lives and helps reduce the amount spent on kidney dialysis and other medical treatments. This bill will help those needing a kidney or liver transplant by removing certain barriers to living donation and thereby strengthening access to transplantation. Most notably it protects those life-saving heroes who choose to be living donors. Please support kidney patients and their donors by cosponsoring H.R. 5263.
