Require insurance companies to list substitute drug for rejected prescription drugs.

As a nurse practitioner in Virginia, I operate a small internal medicine clinic. I often prescribe medications that are not covered by a particular insurance company. The list of approved medicines changes very frequently and it is difficult to find a successful alternative medicine that complies with a particular formulary. The insurance company often sends a rejection letter that states it will not cover a certain drug; however, they do not list an alternative. As a result, the practitioner spends a great deal of time attempting to find a drug that is compliant with a particular insurance company's formulary. There are countless insurance plans that change their drug list often. This process wastes a great deal of time that could be better spent serving the patient population.
