Protect US foreign assistance funding

For a tiny fraction of the federal budget (less than 1%) foreign assistance has produced incredible results:
- 11.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS have access to life-saving antiretroviral treatments
- Over 3 million lives each year are saved through immunization programs
- 25 countries have achieved a 24% reduction in under-five mortality rate
- And the list of incredible life saving achievements go on.
We are shocked and saddened that President Trump has proposed a 29% cut to the State Department budget where most foreign assistance comes from. We want Congress to write a budget that protects funding for foreign assistance, and keeps promises we've made around the world to reduce poverty, fight climate change, and promote human rights.
The President has said that this is a security budget; an "America First" budget. For us, the budget is a moral document--we fight for people living in extreme poverty because it the right thing to do.
But this is one area where morality and national security are on the same side. Hundreds of national security experts agree that strong development policy is an incredibly cost effective way to build partnerships with other nations, gain allies an fundamentally create a more secure world.
We urge you to protect foreign assistance funding as you deliberate the budget for our brothers and sisters living in extreme poverty, and for our own nations security.
