As Americans, we expect Congress to do its most basic job, pass a budget and fund the government. If it can’t do this, members of Congress should not be paid during a government shutdown.
While hundreds of thousands of federal workers are not being paid (and many still working) because of Congress’s inability to prevent a government shutdown, those responsible for the shutdown should also not be paid.
This makes sense in order to motivate Congress to pass a budget and also out of fairness to federal workers who are working without pay.
