Prevent and reduce pollution in Lake Erie

Prevent and reduce pollution in Lake Erie
Why this petition matters
We are three students doing a Human Impact Project. Our job was to find an environmental problem, research it, reach out to professionals, and make a reasonable, cost efficient solution. The environmental problem we choose was pollution in Lake Erie. If you didn’t know, Lake Erie is the most polluted lake of the Great Lakes and its even recommended not to swim in it as it can kill you. In order to make a change, we decided to start a petition on this website, change.org. We are asking YOU to sign this petition to encourage the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. senate to make two laws we have in mind. Our first is make local farmers in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York use less fertilizer or go fertilizer free. Reason being rain fall is pouring on the farms causing the fertilizer to run off into water ways that connect to lake Erie. The fertilizer is rich in Nitrogen and Phosphorus. The Nitrogen and Phosphorus enter Lake Erie through the water ways and lowers the Phd of the water which is bad for the wildlife and us humans. Our second solution was to create a law which is after every use of boats paddles, etc wash them down. The reason to this is that this is the number one way invasive species travel from bodies of water to other bodies of water. There are around 185 invasive species in Lake Erie. These are all harmful to the native wildlife. So again we are targeting the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. senate to make these laws come true. So help us by signing this petition right now.
