Petition to US Congress to impose personal sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko
Why this petition matters
This is a petition for US Congress to respond to violence against peaceful protesters in Belarus against the fraudulent practices during the presidential elections in Belarus 09 August 2020 and impose personal sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko and business/financial organizations affiliated with him.
The hostile acts of the Belarusian law enforcement agencies towards Belarusians protesting against the practices that do not meet the minimum standards for democratic elections displayed during the presidential elections in Belarus in August 2020 is unacceptable and must stop immediately. President Lukashenko is personally responsible for use of excessive force against the peaceful protesters through Belarusian law enforcement agencies that act under the leadership of the Belarusian president.
During the election Belarusians have clearly rejected president Lukashenko’s rule, however Alexander Lukashenko staged widespread falsifications to retain power against the people’s will.
On 10 August 2020, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya articulated plenty of evidence that contradicts results announced by the Belarusian Central Commission for Elections during her conference. The attempt to manipulate the election process during the presidential election, which was the main trigger for the Belarusian people to protest against injustice and demand transparency for the count of casted ballots.
The long queues in front of polling stations in many parts of the country confirm that Belarusian citizens not longer want to live under Europe’s last dictatorship regime. Belarusians have the right to protest and to publicly express their opinion regarding the demands for the democratic election process.
The sanctions must include but aren’t not limited to: freezing of all financial assets belonging to Alexander Lukashenko, any members of his family, and any affiliated businesses and/or financial institutions directly or indirectly with him or any member of his family, including confiscation of any property belonging to any of the aforementioned.
