H.R. 988 of the 116th congress, 2nd session aims to "condemn all acts of police brutality, racial profiling, and the use of excessive and militarized force throughout the country." This bill would be the first start of increasing accountability and providing independent oversight over police-involved shootings and excessive acts of police power. This petition was created to help solve an incredibly complex problem that can not be fixed with one law. This bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on June 1st, 2020. The next step for this bill is passing through the Judiciary Committee where they will debate and decide whether to pass the bill to the House Floor. You can email the members of the House Judiciary Committee to allow the bill to make it to the floor. You can also email your House Representative for your district to get their support. Finally, if the bill passes the House it will have to pass through the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Floor. Emailing your Senators could be helpful as well. As a Citizen of the United States, you must inform your representatives of problems that they need to address. One thing I feel can be added to the bill is including funding for nationwide implicit bias police training. This training would be another crucial step in combatting a system-wide issue of bias among police officers. This petition is in response to a cycle of police violence, peaceful protests, and riots that have seized the attention of the public. Take this opportunity to make a real change and break the cycle.
