The United States of America has the highest cost per student at public universities, including the highest out of pocket tuition and fees of any other country. In a credential society, employers demand individuals with college level degrees and rightfully so. Yet the cost of obtaining a college degree is up 1,120% since 1978. The average cost of one year at an in-state public four year university is $9,410, while out-of-state is $23,893. These numbers reflect tuition and fees only and do not include room and board, transportation, books, etc. According to Huffington Post, “27 cents of every higher education dollar is spent on instruction…that’s like giving money to a stockbroker who takes out 73 cents of every dollar and invests only 27 cents.

It’s time we take a stand against the outrageous cost of an education that leaves future employees rattled with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. I urge you to sign this petition in support of lowering college tuition and fees at public universities. With employers demanding college graduates, we must also demand affordable college education. It’s time to stand up for future generations of college graduates in reducing tuition.
