Bereavement care is broken in the United States. Everyday, and in every community, our loved ones die from an array of causes. Whether you lose a loved one to suicide, homicide, war, overdose, stillbirth, cancer or naturally, surviving families are left with too few resources, programs or protective policies to help.

Today, we know that bereaved spouses, siblings and parents are all at-risk of premature death as a result of their loss. Premature death from a loss is not a mental health problem, it is dire medical outcome that deserves attention, investment, and action.

Lack of consistent, quality bereavement care is an invisible public health crisis. Our nation's systems should support both bereaved families and the professionals who serve them.

While our nation has deeply invested in the prevention of death, as it should, we believe that the health, wellbeing, and economic solvency of those who survive also desires attention, investment, and action. Our fellow bereaved Americans deserve more than your thoughts and prayers.

This petition sheds a national spotlight on the lack of bereavement care by showcasing its impact our nation's families. As a modern society, we no longer have to accept slogging through our loss with little to no access to care.

We can imagine a society with a better tomorrow. We can offer quality support that meets the needs of individudal our cultures, geography and backgrounds. We can bring change. We can reimagine the status quo. We deserve better bereavement care. It's time for a change. Join us!
