Healthcare-NOW started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

July 30, 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare, which lifted a generation of seniors out of poverty through a public, universal health plan. When President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law, he promised: "no longer will this Nation refuse the hand of justice to those who have given a lifetime of service and wisdom and labor to the progress of this progressive country."

For 50 years Medicare has been superior to private health insurance by every measure: it provides more comprehensive coverage and better financial security to enrollees at costs that are lower and rising more slowly. And yet, incredibly, Members of Congress are pushing to privatize Medicare, withdrawing the hand of justice that was extended to seniors 50 years ago.

The United States remains the only country in the developed world without a commitment to healthcare as a human right for every resident. With private healthcare costs rising out of control, we are at a crossroads: will we as a country extend the hand of justice to all patients by improving and expanding Medicare to all, or will we allow for-profit corporations to plunder even more of our healthcare system, driving up costs and eroding access to care further?

On this the 50th anniversary of Medicare, tell your Member of Congress that Medicare is as American as Apple PIE and it should be Protected, Improved, and Expanded to all.
