National "Right to Food Act"
National Right to Food Act
First, I would like to personally thank you for your time and consideration for this proposal. On November 3rd, 2021, Maine historically passed LD 795 or more commonly known as “The Right to Food Act” with a landslide 60% approval rating. This historical measure helps ensure that residents keep their inherent ability to provide for their family’s health and vitality. It states, “The amendment to the state’s constitution declares that all people have a “natural, inherent, and unalienable right” to grow, raise, produce and consume food of their own choosing as long as they do so within legal parameters.” (Maine just voted to become the nation’s first “right to food” state. What does that mean?, n.d.) The Right to Food Act is the first legislation of its kind, and hopefully not the last. As our founding fathers stated in the United States Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It seems that a person’s ability to grow, produce, and provide for themselves and their family should be inherently endowed within our constitutional rights and that measures such as LD 795 should be acted upon to solidify these rights. The basis of life on our planet is the innate ability of all living things to sustain and reproduce, this is part of what makes our planet so unique, diverse, and special. With food insecurities only increasing throughout our communities, adopting a measure such as the Right to Food act would only help to alleviate some of the burdens felt by families struggling with these issues. The future is inherently our children’s, and we must ask ourselves what do we want to leave them? In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Our American pride and principles have set the global standard. Sometimes the smallest voice produces the largest echo. I am calling upon our fellow American’s, our state representatives, and congressmen/ congresswomen to let our voices be heard and enact a measure like LB 795 that would ensure every American and future generations the right to provide and produce food themselves and their families. With 500,000 signatures our voices will be heard. I have included a link below for bill LD 795. Thank you for your time and consideration for this proposal.
