End the War in Our Country
End the War in Our Country
Though there was passion originally behind this petition..I wrote it, I feel, without the passion I felt. Something I feel we all often do is settle. We settle and we stop observing until we feel forced to. I feel like that is what is starting to happen; we’re being forced to face the dreadful things we sweep under the rug every day and try to ignore...hoping it will go away...hoping someone else will fix it. I think there’s so much that needs fixing. So, I thought and I thought some more, and I put the pieces together.
I thought about how angry the world is and I also thought about how much anger swarms around politics. Then, I asked why. The why I came up with is that many still feel their voices aren’t being heard. I strongly believe this is due to the election process and applies to you whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, a Conservative, an Independent, a Liberal, and whatever other label the world has come up with that I’ve forgotten. Right now the election process requires one to vote often Democratic or Republican. Other groups feel they don’t have a chance. Then, within those groups many don’t run and/or voters feel forced to vote for someone in that party they feel others will in order to assure their view points are addressed, BUT what if we didn’t categorize? What if the election process came down to voting for who you wanted in general regardless and the selection gradually was reduced based off votes with no labels? What if it was truly centered around each constituent’s views rather than a fight against two parties? What if it was on a 2 term trial basis? We try out the new process twice & if it isn’t voted on as satisfactory by the majority people, we scrap it. This is the change I’m proposing, but this time..with a little more of my voice behind it.
This was the way I had written the petition:
Over the years, we have fought wars with other countries, but ignored the one going on in our own. There are many fights going on currently involving inequality and many issues of concern that have been brought to the table this election period. Still...one is overlooked. I strongly believe that one of the reasons we, as a nation, struggle to move forward and past issues/find resolutions is because our own government/political process is at war with itself. Many categorize as Republican & Democratic and often refuse to hear that person’s mission or views due to a label. Many vote on a party label and ridicule someone if they do not fall in that label. My petition is to end labeling within government politics, so that each person’s vision can be heard and voted upon without predetermined bias. I believe that going forward this would assist in the process of finding solutions to ongoing issues such as education, healthcare, gun violence, etc. because more ideas and opinions might be more openly heard.
