As the United States transitions into a world of electric cars its important to get people excited about EV's. Americans are used to there gas powered vehicles and many are unlikely to switch to electric unless they are forced too. One simple way to increase the amount of people who want to buy electric vehicles is through tax incentives. Currently in the United States everyone who purchases a new electric vehicle is subject to up to $7,500 in tax credit each year. Unfortunately this rule only apply's to car companies who have sold less than 200,000 EV's. This means that those who purchase a new Tesla or GM EV are no longer subject to the tax credit. This rule has slowed down the growth rate of both Tesla and GM. We can see in other countries like Norway, which has large incentives for purchasing EV's, that the growth rate has become large and in fact in 2020 over 70% of new vehicles purchased were electric. Removing the tax incentive after 200,000 vehicles means other countries will quickly move ahead of the United States in becoming fully electric. The simple fix to this is to increase the cap on when purchasers stop receiving tax credit. There is currently a bill being introduced that will increase the cap from 200,000 to 600,000 which would result in more people going electric quicker. This petition is meant to encourage Congress to pass the bill that will make this must needed change happen!
