Krista Lang started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

The paintings "Discovery of the Mississippi by De Soto" and "Landing of Columbus" are 2 of the paintings hanging in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Both of these paintings clearly are meant to glorify the conquest and genocide of Native Americans. "Landing of Columbus" shows Native Americans hiding behind trees out of fear of the conquistadors and, worse, prostrating before them with arms extended in an act that is somewhere between submission and worship. "Discovery of the Mississippi by De Soto" depicts Native American women in a way that hyper sexualizes them and promotes the sexual abuse of Native women. These paintings are meant to degrade and dehumanize Native Americans while celebrating crimes against humanity committed during the European conquests. They should not be part of the official narrative and celebration of our history which decorates the Rotunda.

We are asking that these paintings be removed and replaced.
