Eliminate food deserts and help communities prosper with H.R. 3104

Hunger is an issue that exists in every county in the US, and affects one in eight Americans. For many, access to food is limited because they live in areas where fresh and unprocessed foods are not readily available or accessible, called food deserts. Residents of food deserts may have to rely on local bodegas and fast food establishments, which typically don’t provide the variety of fresh and healthy foods that a grocery store does. When whole, unprocessed foods are sold, they are often sold at prices higher than typical grocery store pieces. This puts people living in these underserved communities at a disadvantage.
H.R. 3104, the Food Deserts Act of 2017, aims to eliminate food deserts by providing grants to help support the establishment of grocery stores in food deserts. These grocery stores would help provide a variety of fresh and nutritious foods to those in need, at fair market prices. They would also help employ members of the community, as well as offer educational programming and other resources for eating a healthy diet.
