Students Against Marijuana started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

If murder was legalized would we take a stand? If theft was made legal would we steal regularly? Why have we sat back and allowed marijuana to infest our homes, our neighborhoods, and our communities? Have we forgotten that rather it’s made legal or not, marijuana is still a drug?

We have failed to consider the effects this drug has on our lives. Our friends and families will be victims of slow reaction time and memory loss. Their long term consumption will increase their risks for brain damage, heart attacks, and strokes. The drug will alter our normal bodily functions with effects that last longer than the period of intoxication.

We should not believe in legalizing marijuana because there is no way to test the effects of the drug while driving. Hundreds of thousands of the U.S. population ages 16 and up could be driving under the influence without us knowing. Unlike alcohol, there is no way to detect when a person has had enough and is unable to drive. Marijuana can’t be compared to cigarettes where you just get a buzz, it’s a psychoactive drug that has to be taken off our streets.

Marijuana has also led individuals to try other drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Our children have become exposed to marijuana. More adolescents have access to the drug since its legalization in certain states. This gateway drug is not only spreading throughout the country, but also in our schools. We’re sending the wrong message.

As time goes on more states are deciding to legalize recreational marijuana. The government has failed to protect our homes and our children. We have to make a difference.

Sign now to demand the prohibition of marijuana.
