During the Corona Virus pandemic, massive numbers of Americans are certain to lose their jobs and much--if not all--of their income. Many citizens are already facing unemployment, or the temporary closure of their business, which brings the terrifying prospect of an eviction or foreclosure. The stockpiling of food and supplies to enable households to obey orders to shelter in place has already taxed household budgets. Even prior to this crisis, the majority of Americans could not even access $400 for an emergency.

While W2 employees will qualify for unemployment benefits if their income is lost, gig workers, independent contractors, and small business owners do not have access to unemployment benefits. And workers who do qualify for unemployment benefits will not receive their full income.

During a national emergency on this scale, our representatives must take bold, decisive steps to protect everyday Americans. We ask Congress to ensure that housing insecurity does not add to the stress, panic and risk-taking by fearful citizens. We demand a national moratorium on evictions and foreclosures to ensure Americans can remain safely in their homes until the crisis abates and people can return to work.
