With the Electoral College system that was designed in 1804, modern cities are creating unfair voting conditions for rural areas. The population in the U.S. has increased from approximately 5.3 million to 331 million since that time, with 80% of today's population living in urban areas. Modern infrastructure is far more advanced than in the early 1800's, allowing for urban areas to be much more populated than before.

Opinions are most often shared by word of mouth, and in large cities where information can be shared quickly via word of mouth, it is very likely for a majority of the populace to strongly support one side of an issue. Most may simply share the opinions of their peers without any knowledge on the subject.

Illinois is a perfect example of how urban areas are negatively affecting rural areas' representation. Only 13 of the 103 counties in Illinois had a majority of votes for Joe Biden this year, and he got Illinois's electoral votes. Cook County (home to Chicago, the most densely populated city in Illinois) was one of the few counties that voted majority Joe Biden. Joe Biden received 2,881,554 votes in Illinois, and Chicago's population is approximately 2.701 million. I am not claiming that every single person in Chicago voted in favor of Joe Biden, but it was undoubtedly a major contributor towards his cause, considering only 13 counties voted majority Joe Biden.
