Groundhog Day is pitiful: “A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat.” That’s right, Punxsutawney Phil is vermin, nothing more than a rodent.

William James Murray, on the other hand, represents the best of us. He is Peter Venkman. He is Carl Spackler. He is Ernie McCracken. He is Frank Cross. He is Liberace. And, yes, he is Garfield.

I’m convinced that Bill Murray is the patron saint of the United States. He watches over us. He protects us.

Will we give him the homage he deserves? 

In the immortal words of Phil Connors: “There is no way that this winter is ever going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don't see any other way out. He's got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.”
