Jen Frankl started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives

Currently children enrolled in the American public school system are required to attend school everyday. Each year, depending on district, children are given 70 hours of absence without excuse.  After 70 hours, approximately 10 school days per year, they are required to have a medical excuse or it may affect their ability to graduate to their next grade due to truancy.
This petition signed by American families, was created to ask the House to write legislation to relax the attendance laws during a time of crisis. This gives parents the ability to keep children home or send them to school.  It could effectively slow the spread of Covid19 across America by taking 30% of children out of schools to work from home for the next three months.
Many parents work from home or stay at home, they are able to watch children and help with school work.  Creating an option, allows parents that need the school system, to still use it. Some districts may be able to consolidate staff and teach from home.
We hope you consider this option or at the very least, another option for truancy during a crisis.  There is no reason for children to suffer being held back due to truancy because we have an outbreak.  Thank you.
