Reform Midwife Laws

Beth Stottman started this petition to U.S. House of Representatives and

More and more babies are dying at the hands of Lay Midwives, Direct Entry Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives. As of now we have no uniform laws in place to protect the mother or the child, I ask that as a nation you instill standards such as Uniform Certification and education methods including yearly continueing education classes, a standard risk in and risk out assesment of all homebirth candidates done in concert with a Certified Nurse Midwife and a OBGYN, an open and transparent peer review process reguarding all deaths, as well as requiring anyone attending a homebirth or an out of hospital birth to carry Medical Malpractice insurance.  Patients also need to have a clear cut emergancy transfer plan and criteria working in concert with the closest hospital including but not limited to being pre-registered at that hospital and having all the lab work on file. A woman deserves the right to choose where she gives birth, but she also deserves the right to the best medical care possible.
