Halloween isn't just another day, and its not a marketing holiday by any means. Halloween's origins come from the Celtic isles, where samhain has been celebrated for centuries. As a time of honoring the ancestors and those who have gone before us, Samhain/Halloween is the most important holiday to pagan faiths.

Trick or treating also has its origins from this holiday, originally it was believed offering sweets to the spirits would prevent them from cursing you, dressing up in costumes would disguise you from them, and the carving of Jack o' lanterns was to guide the dead home to you when the "veil is thin" between the worlds. 

We already have days where kids go trick or treating early, and that seems the best solution.  This day matters to so many people, and many of us prepare for it from September until October 31st. It's a spiritual new year for those of us in the pagan faiths.
