According to Debate.org people argued that paid maternity leave is a privilege and will create inequality within the work field. Non-supporters also advocate that becoming pregnant and having children is a choice and no employer should be forced to pay women paid maternity leave.

For two decades America has debated this topic and the number of women who take maternity leave has remained stagnant for 22 years.

American Journal of Public Health found approximately 273,000 women in the U.S. took maternity leave on average every month between 1994-2015 that showed no upward or downward trend during that time.

Research Scientist and Study Author Jay Zagorsky at The Ohio State University's Center for Human Resource Research told CBS News stated The U.S. is one of the richest nations in the world and 1 in 4 out of 173 countries that lack paid leave.

According to Global Finance, the U.S. is ranked number 13 from the richest to poorest within in the world.

In the U.S FMLA passed by the federal government in 1993 provides eligible employees 12 weeks of unpaid time off during the 1st 12 months after birth to care for a newborn.

Current Population Survey conducted by researchers found in 2015 47.5 who took maternity leave were compensated.

As of right now, only three states have enacted paid maternity leave, which are California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island but numbers have not yet changed of women partaking in maternity leave.

Here are three reasons women should have paid maternity leave:

1. It is a human rights issue for women. In some cases, women return to work still bleeding and sore because they can't afford the time off. Not taking the appropriate time off can result in postpartum, ability to breastfeed for the baby to remain healthy.

2.Discriminating against pregnant women is wrong, there are laws in place to protect expecting mothers. Instead of repealing those laws, there should be even more protections put into place. Typically, the people who try to deny women these rights are conservative men. Women still fight for equality against men within the workforce and shouldn't be penalized for something that is considered natural.

3.The US is the only advanced economy that does not mandate a paid maternity leave. Women should have the right to stay home with her child after birth while keeping her job and income. Women have created the population and deserve more respect.

In President Trump's 2016 election, he promised to provide six-week maternity leave for women. How will America be great if we don't respect the gender that created the world?
