Make Election Day a Federal Holiday in the US
Voting in elections is a challenge in the United States - about one third of registered citizens who choose not to vote cite schedule/timing conflicts and general inconvenience as the reason. Long lines at polling stations after work, crowds, and other inconveniences keep even informed and intelligent people from voting. Those who work long hours are unable to schedule a trip to the polls. On top of this, the new voter ID laws will put another barrier in front of people from being able to participate in our democracy. Making Election Day (1st Tuesday in November) a Federal Holiday will remove obstacles from the democratic process, raise awareness and motivation, and ultimately increase voter participation, a long sought-after goal.
