Enforcing Graphic Warning Labels On Single Use Plastics
Enforcing Graphic Warning Labels On Single Use Plastics
The core aspect that brought our group together was our love for oceans and our desire to contribute to ocean conservation. As we researched major environmental hazards, one of the most common contributors was plastic. So much of our life is dominated by one use plastic, such as shopping bags, straws, food containers, and water bottles. Millions of pounds of the objects are floating around in our oceans, killing marine life, ruining the environment, and disrupting natures natural cycles. We wanted to find a way to make individuals more empathetic to the situation in the hopes that they will become more conscious about plastic use. To do this, we ultimately decided to focus on creating warning labels, modeled after the graphic warning labels on cigarette containers, to be placed on plastic water bottles. Once the labels were created, we proceeded to conduct experiments with the labels on UC Berkeley’s campus in evaluating people’s reactions and the label’s effectiveness. We ultimately concluded that the labels are effective at increasing awareness of the gravity of plastic pollution and many people believe our labels will help deter people from buying plastic. This petition was created for individuals to sign to help advocate for our warning labels to be legally enforced to be placed on plastic water bottles.
