A Three Year Sandhill Crane Trial Hunt in Michigan

Seasons have been enacted across other flyways, and in areas of other popular waterfowling states. Based on the last 3 years, it appears we have a heavy flyway here in Michigan. Inclusion of this species to our already vast bag opportunities , could help stimulate further tag and duck stamp sales, which help fund the purchasing of lands to allow migratory birds areas to rest and reproduce. Also, they are rumored to be worthy prey to hunt and very tasty. Additionally, few, if any, other states in this flyway have seasons, meaning any potential impact to overall population numbers, would be minimal. Fear of these birds leading to issues such as those in the Tundra swan hunts, where Trumpeter Swans were mistakenly shot, is also likely to be minimal, as they are a unique bird in sound(vocalizations), flight and appearance. A three year trial hunt, similar to the one performed for early Teal season, would allow the collection of data to determine its viability and assurance that false kill rates would meet the U.S.FW standards. After the trial, it could then be made a regular part of the Michigan season, should the numbers match the requirements.
