Obesity is a very common, extremely serious, disease. According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), the prevalence of obesity in adults was 42.4% in 2017~2018. Obesity can lead to stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Everything in that list can be life-threatening. Many people become obese by eating too much - mainly processed foods - and moving too little. “The healthiest diets cost about $1.50 more per day than the least healthy diets, according to new research from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH).”, according to hsps.harvard.edu. The median household income in the U.S. is $63,030 a year, and the average household size is 3.14 people. The average American spends $7.64 on food everyday, which equates to the average household spending $8,767 on food a year. Researchers estimate that people who eat healthy foods spend $1.50 more on food each day. So an average family would spend an additional $1,719.15 per year bringing their total to $10,486.15, which may not seem like a lot compared to the median income, but when you add in other expenses (housing, clothing, etc.) it becomes much more of an issue. By signing this petition, you can do your part in lowering obesity rates in America.
