Stewart Saunders started this petition to US Consumer Products Safety Commision Steve Hanway -

COVID-19 lives for 3 to 7 days on plastic (New England Journal of Medicine).  Artificial turf is plastic. Artificial turf has characteristics to efficiently transfer COVID-19 player to player, then any person or surface contacted after practice or game.

Installation and replacement of these fields throughout the United States should be stopped immediatly until solutions for COVID-19 are actively "controlling" the virus.

COVID-19 is an emerging highly infectious disease spreading rapidly that has killed over 66,000 (05/03/2020) in the US the first few months of this year. The proven preventative is eliminating human contact and reducing physical contact points where the virus can be transported human to human.  Scientists are beginning learn how quickly it travels, and how it travels:

- airborne (aerosol is medical term) - through breathing, talking, sneezing, coughing - and travels up to 14 feet. (CDC: COVID-19 can live in the air for 3 hours, plastic for 3 days (fox17.com))

- lifespan on non-porous surfaces.  The virus can be transferred on non-porous surfaces like plastic where it has proved to live up to 72 hours (3 days) - . It's been detected up to 17 days later on cruise ships where outbreaks have occurred. (National Institute of Health - New coronavirus stable for hours on surfaces :SARS-CoV-2 stability similar to original SARS virus - Dr. Anthony Fauci is a commenter for this article)

- travels on shoes - can travel on shoes over 13 feet (CDC).  That means each COVID-19 virus deposited on the field would have a 26 foot diameter circle to travel on a passing players shoe if they were walking, further if running.

- asymptomatic individuals transfer the virus - Up to 80% can be “silent carriers” (Healthline/ World Health Organization / British Medical Journal: COVID-19 four fifths of cases are asymptomatic, China figures indicate).
sad example: Skagit, Washington. 60 member church choir attended practice with social distancing on March 10.  45 contracted COVID-19, 2 died. (CNN).  No one displayed any symptoms.  The 75% rate of infection transmission was attributed to deep breathing while singing.

Artificial turf is plastic that COVID-19 could live on for days depending on conditions.  Players contacting one another, breathing hard, yelling, talking, falling on turf, wiping sweat off their faces that could pickup and contract the virus.  Should COVID-19 deposit on turf from an infected player at the beginning of a game weekend, the virus would have an opportunity to transfer to all of the players on that field and their families, but every game played during the weekend.  That could spread it to local families, and families of competing teams from other towns and cities.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission should ban installation or replacement of all athletic artificial turf fields until a vacinne is created and is proven effective to slow COVID-19 spread.  Natural grass does a much better job by being "washed down" by watering and naturally absorbs water that could contain droplets of COVID-19 and takes it into the dirt where it will stay separated from humans until it dies.
