U.S. Congress: Throw Big Oil off the Fiscal Cliff, Not Clean Energy and the Environment!
We've got an idea for Congress: How about instead of cutting investments that support our families, protect our health, and preserve our environment, we finally get rid of those handouts that give oil companies billions of our taxpayer dollars every year to keep polluting our air and waterways?
It seems like a no-brainer, but right now Big Oil's congressional allies are pushing hard to do just the opposite as Congress looks for a way to deal with the so-called "fiscal cliff." Big Oil's allies in Congress want to protect special tax breaks for dirty energy companies while cutting investments in clean energy, slashing funding for our National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges, and undermining efforts to clean up contaminated waterways. That makes no sense. But unless Congress hears from us now, they might just have their way.
Please sign our petition to Congress today to make sure they throw Big Oil off the fiscal cliff, not the environmental programs that we all depend on!
- U.S. Senate
I urge you to stand with people, not polluters, during the fiscal cliff negotiations. I hope you will support a balanced plan that includes ending the billions in subsidies that we currently give to oil and gas companies. If we eliminate these tax breaks and loopholes, it would save us more than $40 billion over the next 10 years. This would not only provide needed revenues, but it would be beneficial to public health, which is harmed by the pollution these fossil fuels create.
I also ask that you renew the Wind Energy Production Tax Credit, the Renewable Energy Investment Tax Credit and other investments in solar, wind, and other clean energy sources. Clean energy is good for the economy and the environment. The wind industry alone has created over 75,000 jobs, but those jobs will be at risk without the vital incentive that the PTC provides.
Finally, I urge you to oppose any further cuts to environmental programs as part of the sequester or any deal to replace those devastating budget cuts. These critical programs have already been cut and represent only 1.25% of the overall budget. Cutting funding for national priorities like National Parks, and clean water will not raise enough money to solve the problem, but it will cause real harm to our cherished air, water, lands, and wildlife.
Thank you for considering these comments and for working to protect our environment and the health of our families as Congress works to resolve our fiscal challenges and grow our economy.
