June Matics started this petition to U.S. Board of Geographic Names

"Negro Mountain" is a long ridge of the Allegheny Mountains, stretching 30-mile (48 km) from Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, north to the Casselman River in Pennsylvania, United States.

The mountain's name uses a term that can be widely considered as offensive, and reinforces attitudes and ideologies steeped in a time of slavery.

According to some sources, the name of the mountain originates from an incident where white soldiers or hunters, engaged in fighting with indigenous people during the colonial era. A black man, sometimes referred to as a slave, with the white colonialists died during the skirmish and his death was commemorated with the naming of "Negro Mountain."

If the story is true, there are better ways to acknowledge this history.

Renaming the mountain "Reparation" or "Restitution" Mountain would both acknowledge the sacrifice of the individual, and acknowledge the violence to the indigenous people involved.

Sign the petition and ask that "Negro Mountain" be renamed.
