Independent researcher and journalist Alexa O'Brien — @carwinb on Twitter or visit O'Brien's website http://www.alexaobrien.com/secondsight/archives.html — has been undertaking important, historic, court room documentation from the trial of alleged military whistleblower Bradley Manning, providing information not available to the public elsewhere.
O'Brien's (and others') reports about the process of gaining access as a member of the media to Fort Meade Military Base, to cover the Manning trial, raises strong concerns that the U.S. Army is acting in a way to minimize and/or otherwise disrupt free coverage of the court proceedings.
There is an undeniable and historic need for widespread, professional, independent coverage and documentation of the Bradley Manning trial. Witnessing events such as the Manning trial to document them is an indivisible element of free speech. You cannot claim to have free speech if people are prevented from documenting events freely.
We ask the Public Affairs Office at the U.S. Army's Fort George G. Meade base in Maryland, to grant independent journalist Alexa O'Brien — and any other media interested in observing the Bradley Manning trial — full access to the court room for the entirety of the proceedings.
