Protect "Green Hill" From Being Sold

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

The area known affectionately in the Eastern Avenues/Federal Heights neighborhood as "Green Hill", has been used as open space for decades.  While neighbors have used this urban green space knowing it was owned by the University of Utah, it is an attribute that many depend on for daily recreation with family and pets, winter activities, and the annual Federal Heights Easter Egg Hunt.

It was announced on Oct 4th that the University of Utah Trustees will soon vote on whether or not to sell a 50’ by roughly 180’ swath of land which is the most level and usable section of Green Hill to the home located at 1408 Military Way for $237,500.  While other parcels were deeded by the University a half a century ago to some neighbors along Military Way, this has always been maintained as University-owned open space.  Of course, the Federal Heights neighborhood, home to some of the University’s most supportive alums and donors, is very concerned.  Losing access to this property would stifle the recreation pattern of many neighbors.

There have been no consultations with the neighborhood, which while acknowledging the University’s ownership, is gravely worried about the loss of any portion of this open green space.  Given how intertwined the lives of the residents of Federal Heights are with the University, a delay in the vote and a public hearing would be very appreciated.

Please attend a community meeting with University of Utah President Ruth Watkins on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 5 pm in her home, the Eccles House (1525 E Penrose Drive), to discuss the pending Green Hill property sale.

Please help save this green space in our urban neighborhood by adding your name to this petition and by calling the President's office at the University of Utah at (801) 581-5701 and (801) 585-0773.  You can also email ruth.watkins@utah.edu and president@utah.edu
