The widespread use of cheap palm oil is causing huge deforestation and therefore, habitat loss, not just in Indonesia and Malaysia, but throughout the world .

The forests are being cleared  to make space for oil-palm monoculture, and this means the three surviving species of orangutan, plus the Sumatran tiger, are losing their homes. One species, the Sumatran orangutan, is listed as critically endangered, meaning it has an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Palm oil cultivation also contributes to rising greenhouse-gas emissions, and the deforestation itself is very damaging to the planet. There is a low market demand for Certified Sustainable palm Oil, which means that leading palm oil buyers purchase the non-certified, cheaper oil.

The demand for palm oil is growing as it is used in food production, in soaps and detergents, as animal feed and as a fuel. It is projected that the demand for it will double by 2020.

This need to stop before it's too late. An industry levy has already been proven to work in regards to changing manufacturer behaviour and consumer buying habits. When the sugar tax was introduced, the fear was that the impact of the levy would be passed to retailers and consumers, but instead, the manufacturers changed their recipes in order to protect their brand and promote sales.

Introducing a levy on Palm Oil will tip the balance towards environmentally responsible ingredient sourcing, and incentivise and reward sustainable manufacturing processes. Please sign to ensure this happens.
