An appeal to Tywyn Town Council to declare a Climate Emergency

This petition made change with 132 supporters!

We, the undersigned citizens of Tywyn (Gwynedd), call for a motion on the Tywyn Town Council agenda of 13th February 2019 to declare a ‘Climate Emergency.’

Reason for the petition:

Extreme weather events in the last few years have presented severe challenges to transport, agriculture and other services. Unless we act on climate, we collectively face the greatest threat to our local and global environment. According to October’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 1.5C report, humanity has 12 years to take the action needed to turn this around, so that we can avoid reaching tipping points where we no longer have the ability to avoid extreme weather events.  It is clear to many of us that we must act locally and globally.

Inspired by Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Powys, Bristol and numerous other councils who recently voted to declare a climate emergency, we call upon Tywyn Town Council to:

  • Declare a Climate emergency
  • Support a community-led consultation to develop a plan to reduce Tywyn’s Greenhouse gas emissions to net zero as soon as possible and to make the town more resilient to climate impacts;
  • Maximise local benefits of these actions in areas such as health, agriculture, transport and the economy;
  • Ask Welsh and UK governments for help bringing this plan to fruition.

This is a summary of the more detailed proposal that Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd and other concerned citizens are making, which is available to be read together with this petition on the Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd website (greenertywyn.co.uk). Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd has agreed to provide the correspondence address for the letter to the Council.
