Ari Doccola started this petition to Type 1(Juvenile onset) diabetes and

Living with Type 1 diabetes as an adult costs exorbitant amounts—from pump supplies, insulin, needles, backup supplies, eye exams, endocrinologist appointments and too many prescriptions to count, this issue is truly an epidemic. Most developed countries are able to address the needs of those with chronic illnesses, where Type 1 diabetics in the US are 3-18x more likely to die from diabetic complications due to lack of access to necessary supplies. I implore my state government to endorse a bill that supports more funding toward state insurance. I can barely keep up with my diabetic bills, let alone other necessary monthly costs I need to afford. I consider myself to be a middle-class worker who should be able to stay on top of bills, so I can’t imagine how lower income individuals are able to provide for their own costs, or those of their children. The disease alone takes a daily toll on you—there isn’t a second of the day or night my body isn’t asking for something—more insulin for a high sugar, more glucose for a low sugar. I am told by my endocrinologist that I am among the best at managing my illness; and I am struggling to survive. How can we expect low- to middle- class individuals to live a full, healthy balanced life without access to proper care. This includes insulin pumps and the many supplies that go with them. On my middle of the road insurance, I have to pay $800 (and that’s after financial assistance) for just one prescription. This is one of many costs I must pay to live an average life. But I dream of a beautiful, carefree existence that I may never reach based on my disease alone. If I could at least influence a change for people like me, who daydream about peace of mind, I will feel successful.  Please consider taking action with me on this potentially life saving pursuit. There is hope on the horizon; it will take persistence and unity. Thank you.
