Newcastle Upon Tyne is a lively, diverse and metropolitan city, known for its nightlife, art, music and sports. Widely regarded as one of England's core cities, and a gateway on the road to Scotland, our city is a centre of culture, architecture and business. With a population of around 250,000 inside the city, and well over 1 million in the surrounding urban areas, it is also a city that often operates late into the night.

Our Tyne and Wear Metro service, which connects Newcastle Upon Tyne to the coast, South Shields and links up with Sunderland, should be reflective of modern times and the needs of the population. Many communities throughout the United Kingdom often feel that we have little influence over the local transport on which many of us depend. The Metro service here is in urgent need of investment and extention to new destinations. There is a lot of room for improvement in our local transportation services which will take a lot of time and careful planning. However, one thing that could be improved with relative ease is a better co-ordinated timetable that reflects the needs of service users and brings us firmly into 2018. That is why this petition is calling on the North East Combined Authority and the Tyne and Wear Passenger Executive (Nexus) to remove some of the barriers in the way of service users who work late in the city centre or who need to get home using affordable transport by extending the daily operating hours of the Metro system.

Having last trains to the Coast, South Shields and South Hylton from the city centre finishing up just before or shortly after midnight simply isn't good enough. We need a timetable that works for the general public and is there for those who might finish their work shift later than the last metro. Currently, if someone who lives in North Shields or anywhere round the coastal area finishes work later than 23:30 then they aren't going to make it home without paying a lot more than they would on our metro service if it operated later hours.

This petition is calling for a Metro service and public transport system that operates until at least 01.30 in the morning so that there can be easy access to and from our city at affordable prices. It is the public demand that should dictate how our transportation links and services operate and we should have a say in the timetabling of the Tyne and Wear metro system.
