Problem
"The Tybee Island Public Safety Committee has recommended that new four-way stops be installed on Jones Avenue. These stops areat 4th Street, 8th Street, and 15th Street. The existing stops at 6th Street, 12th Street, 14th, Chatham Ave, and at Solomon, as well as the stop light on First Street, will remain unaffected. DPW has completed installation of all new signs as of December 4th. Drive carefully!"

These stop signs don't make any sense. Is the goal to make roads more functional or to cause more problems? Are there not greater needs for improvements elsewhere?

Jones Avenue was a road that had few interruptions from one end to another. Locals and others alike could take this road to get to their destination while avoiding the pedestrians on Highway 80/Butler and to avoid the stop signs that are all over 2nd Avenue and Lovell Avenue (streets designated as "bike routes"). Why the Tybee Island Public Safety Committee deems this appropriate is questionable, can they leave their focus on keeping the golf carts off of Jones? Turning onto Jones at these locations wasn't difficult and pedestrian traffic is minimal.

Solution
Remove these new stop signs.

Personal story
I have been driving down this road to get home for over 9 years. I didn't know of the installation of these new signs and almost ran them. Since they are so new and I'm so used to driving this way I still almost run them by mistake every time.

This is the road we take to get home in the safest and most convenient way. This road allowed us to avoid most pedestrian traffic along with not only bikes and but also golf carts. Bikes and Golf Carts were prohibited on Jones, signs were put up, but this rule was still not enforced. These signs are no longer posted. This makes me believe that instead of trying to enforce no golf carts they gave up and started putting their efforts towards implementing these new stop signs.

Police also have been known to sit and monitor pre existing stop signs. If you didn't come to a complete stop, you got a ticket. Now there are more opportunities for them to catch someone who didn't stop long enough by mistake.

These new signs make no sense, I invite the Tybee Island Public Safety Committee to try and change my mind.
