It is unbelievable that the "r-word" is still used today in a derogatory way when people really mean to say stupid, ridiculous, or something else. I'm sure that you still hear it around campus, work, in public, or anywhere and I think we need to do something about it. Using "retarded" as an insult or using it as an adjective to describe something unrelated to the real disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, is wrong. It can also be very hurtful to individuals affected by ASD. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a genetic disorder that can be caused by many different changes in genes or, in some cases, rare mutations. Symptoms of ASD can vary from person to person that is why it is a spectrum disorder. Some symptoms can be "impaired social skills, communication problems, and repetitive behaviors". These are some of the things that people might see and think that a person with this disorder is different, but in reality they have no control over whether or not they were born with the disorder. If someone can't control something about themselves, why do people still judge them for it?

So please stop using the r-word, learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder below, and sign the petition! Spread the word to end the word!
