Trump and the U.S. government are carrying out a coup against the democratically-elected government of Venezuela, and Big Tech is playing a big part.

Recently, Twitter censored 1,196 accounts of pro-government Venezuelans. Twitter other major corporations are helping frame the narrative for a U.S. military intervention.

In the past 20 years of the Bolivarian Revolution, more than 2.5 million homes have been built for the poorest of the poor. College attendance has increased by 150 percent. Venezuela has the largest certified oil reserves in the world, and those natural resources fund major social programs. All of these are under threat by U.S. interference.

As a tech worker, I believe that we cannot remain neutral in this situation. It is up to us to keep the tech giants in check. We must stop them from abusing the power they have over one of the most far-reaching means of communication today –– social media –– and using that for political censorship.

Reinstate the 1,196 censored accounts. The people of the world deserve to hear the voices of the Venezuelan government.

It is not for Twitter to decide which government is and isn't legitimate.

Many of us will march on Washington, D.C., on Sat. March 16th, to stand in solidarity with Venezuelans who are fighting to defend their right to choose their own government. Join us.
