There is no harm in requiring masks, and it will help keep kids, teachers, and staff safe. But choosing to not require them could lead to serious sickness in some children and that is unacceptable to me.

The science is clear that masks help reduce spread of COVID-19, the vast majority of Alabamians remain unvaccinated and at risk, and we need to keep our schools open and safe.

I’m signing because this is a no brainer! K-12 students cannot choose to get vaccinated yet. Masks are their BEST protection! Masks are most effective when everyone is wearing one, not just a few. A recommendation is not enough. Masks have to be mandated at this point. We don’t know enough about these new variants to rest on the thinking that kids are not as vulnerable. TCS, don’t allow the backlash to keep you from making the most safe decision for your vulnerable students who have no other protection. Require masks for all students and staff at least for a month then reassess!

In the face of a virulent, mutating, aerosol virus the only path forward includes masking.
