Hari Gawai Dayak and Hari Keamatan Festival is a very significant occasion for the people of Sarawak and Sabah. During this special day which falls on 1st June of every year, millions of Sarawakians and Sabahans rush home to their families and loved ones to celebrate this auspicious festival. It may not be a big deal in Peninsular Malaysia but it means a whole world to the Dayaks in Sarawak and the Kadazan, Dusun, and other ethnic groups of Sabah.

Today, since hundreds of thousands Sarawakians and Sabahan reside in Peninsular Malaysia due to professional or personal obligations, it would be great  if the new Pakatan Harapan government could recognize these two festivals as a National Public Holiday. This will facilitate out of state Sarawakians and Sabahans to make their way home for the festivities. Moreover these two festivals are already the main features in tourism promotion for the country and recognized internationally.

Therefore, I hope we, especially Sarawakians and Sabahans, all support Dato Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali calls for the Federal gomen to gazette the 1st and 2nd of June as a National Public Holiday.
