I have been a victim of extreme cyberbullying on tumblr and have witnessed other users go through the same. Tumblr has done very little to protect its users.
I was stalked frequently on tumblr, and had my personal information leaked ALL over the site without my consent. I had to FIGHT with tumblr support to get my information taken down- they asked for ridiculous "proof" (such as my full name and official/legal documents as well as a personal photo of me) that I would have rather not handed over, just for the sake of my protection. That is unacceptable. Not everyone is willing to give that information up over the internet, for a multitude of reasons. While it is hard to offer legit proof without these documents and images, tumblr support should still offer more support for its users. A lot of blogs made for the purpose of leaking information and/or maliciously acting towards individuals are self-incriminating.
"You could just turn anon off if you're being harassed." Even with the anonymous option off, a stalker/harasser could easily make tons of sockpuppet accounts with one or two emails after suspension and continue; it is likely that they can even use the SAME E-MAIL that was originally used on a suspended account to continue harassment further. Tumblr has nothing implemented to stop this AT ALL. I have experienced over 20 messages from 20 different accounts in the span of an hour. That is not normal.
The site is rather nice, as are the functions. But the staff and their utter carelessness and lack of empathy/protection for their userbase is deplorable and unprofessional. They are letting illegal activity happen on their site, and no one is getting helped. Little is being done about it. Even if tumblr has a large userbase, the staff should be able to handle cases like this. It is happening more frequently because support is allowing harassers and stalkers to get away with it.
Tumblr needs to protect their users better. They need to fix the "block anons" system (because blocking anonymous users who send you abusive messages DOES NOT WORK), put a "followers only" option on blogs, and many other privacy options. I have frequently emailed tumblr support for help only to be told that being encouraged to self harm and KILL MYSELF is "freedom of speech." Having my posts reblogged by a user and having them say "go harass this person" is apparently "freedom of speech" according to support. Freedom of Speech is NOT meant to harm others. TUMBLR ENCOURAGES THE USE OF ITS SITE TO CYBERBULLY WITH THESE POLICIES. THIS CANNOT CONTINUE.
Tumblr support needs to GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER. This CANNOT continue or stalkers and predators will continue to run rampant on their site, and we as users who want to enjoy the site and communicate with friends run a risk of being victims as long as this continues.
