Our weekly waste is once again not being collected. On top of this our landfills are reaching capacity with illegal dumping happening everywhere. Our cities are filthy & everywhere I drive on my daily routine I see rubbish: On the roads, in the storm water drains, in the veld & around our houses & shopping center's. Our urban areas are becoming so dirty they look like dirty townships with smelly rivers full of sewage. We sit with several issues of which waste management is one of them. Recycling is a hot topic globally. In JHB they collect recycling as part of their waste Management.These are paid from the rates & taxes & is considered the normal way of waste collection. PTA is 10 years behind JHB in their mentality towards recycling. If people want to recycle they have to pay a private company extra money to come & collect their recycling from their pavement. They are not allowed to cancel their waste collection fee from Tshwane as it is compulsory to pay. Some schools have set up recycling & get paid for the effort. This extra money can be used to better the school grounds. If each person washed the recycling we would not have smelly dustbins & the Bagarezi would not have to clean it in our rivers. If the Government was to make recycling part of the normal waste collection, as it is in JHB, it would reduce the waste going into landfills & we would not have this current problem of non-collection of waste.  There are several companies who are already collecting recycling from the different areas & they already have their collection days and rosters, it would be easy to approach these companies to make a change. By approaching our local recyclers we would be improving the economy in our local areas which in turn creates more jobs. When people earn more they are able to maintain their properties & surrounding areas better. These companies can be paid from the money we pay for our rates & taxes. It’s a win-win for everyone & the environment.
