Truett Student started this petition to Truett McConnell University

COVID-19 or the "Novel Coronavirus" has inevitably landed itself into the United States seemingly overnight. EPSN's seasonal cancellation, the continuation of online courses at the renowned Harvard University, and Trump's travel restrictions have done the opposite of making people feel secure. These major organizations making such enormous decisions have caused more people to take drastic measures. Wiping out their neighborhood supermarkets of basic toiletries is just one. But this problem isn't just in California or DC, it is here. A professor who will go unnamed has relayed to another student at Truett that a commuter has contracted COVID-19. As alarming as that is, I believe it is our right to know and be informed when something as grave as this is discovered, especially on campus. Not only is the one student in danger of the loss of his life, but each student on campus is now at risk of contracting the disease. Most importantly said Coronavirus may lie dormant in its host after infection for as long as five days before showing symptoms. This can lead to even more dangers, as those infected without symptoms can also spread the virus. For example, if the student infected with Coronavirus had come into contact with others, we may be in the middle of transmitting the disease without even being aware of it. For those reasons I believe we should not be required to take live classes, as the transmission of the disease can be so silent. There are multiple locations on campus that are used by the students daily, such as the Caf and SWC. The amount of student interaction between classes and these areas are of high risk if COVID-19 were on campus. This isn't an issue of size here on campus, as my high school of around 850 students in now in closing due to this virus. I believe that we should take insight from these institutions and make the decision we see best fit for the health of our community and college. Being in the best shape of our lives in our college years simply isn't enough to make us immune to this virus. Though the recovery rate is rising, it isn't a risk I want to take. Please consider our health and your own as well as you make your decisions. Thank you.
