Ben Sutherly started this petition to Troy (Ohio) Planning Commission; Troy (Ohio) Mayor

Troy, Ohio has one of the most beautiful downtowns in the state. A proposal to demolish a large building at 112-118 W. Main St. (former IOOF/Tavern building) would leave a huge gap in the city's historic streetscape. It would also cost Troy and Miami County a significant part of their history, including the c. 1841 county courthouse in the rear of the structure that has significant ties to the county's early African-American history.

The city so far has declined to move forward with code enforcement against the property owner, despite safety concerns created when a freak tornado in January 2020 damaged the building's front parapet along West Main Street. All other property owners whose downtown buildings sustained tornado damage have fixed them up; this particular property owner is the outlier.

The Troy Planning Commission can put this situation on the best path toward resolution by rejecting the property owner's request to demolish the building and replace it with a large grass lot along the most traveled route into and out of downtown Troy. Through code enforcement, the building's parapet can be repaired, putting the building in a better position to be sold or for the facade to be preserved as part of a redevelopment of the property.
